Activities and Nutrition For Week of March 29th

What a great week for running! We took advantage of the warmer weather with lots running and other outdoor exercises. With our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade we encouraged the kids to keep track of their laps while running or walking. To help them keep count we handed each of them a rubberband to put around their wrist each time they ran a lap. Our 1st and 2nd graders did a great job in obstacle course drills and running or walking around the track.

We had a fun first kindergarten run club this Wednesday - they were all ready to go! We did obstacle course drills and walked or ran around the track at least 3 times!

Thanks kids for being good listeners.

Please remind your child to remember run club days: Tuesdays and Thursdays
Kindergarten - Wednesdays only.

We have many wonderful volunteers helping us each run club day. And, the children need to remember the rules are the same as when in school. So we ask them to please listen and respect their group leaders and our other helpers.

NUTRITION:

We learned about sugar and other sweeteners. Specifically, we learned about how sugar is processed from the sugar cane and the nutrients that are removed in the conventional process method which make white sugar and molasses as a by product. All or most of the nutrients goes into the molasses and any remaining nutrients left in the "white" sugar are removed - making regular white sugar an anti-nutrient! SO, it's important to limit sugar to very small amounts.

Lable reading - we will cover this more later in run club, but we talked about other sugars found in ingredient labels: Brown Sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, corn syrup, sugar, aspartame, sucralose (or splenda). We talked shere we find them and limiting ALL of these ingredients.

We sampled Agave Nectar and Raw Honey both a better for you sweetener that are great on cereals, pancakes, toast or in baked goods.

Great job!

Nutrition Talks for Week of March 22nd

This week we talked about the importance of water for our health and we need to drink more of it to stay hydrated: help us stay alert and focused! We also learned that water content is high in fresh vegetbles and fruits. We sampled fresh snap peas and dehydrated snap peas. The kids like them so well that there have been many requests for the dehydrated snap peas of which can be found at our local natural food co-op at 4th and Washburn.

We discussed many different local restaurant menus and how we can make good choices when we eat out with our family. We picked out good choices on their menus and some "poor" choices. The kids really enjoyed these discussions and

2010 Spring Meadows Run Club

Hello Meadows Run Club Parents!

We thank you for your child’s participation in the Meadows Run Club Spring 2010! We look forward to this Spring's club as we have more fun in store for the kids! We are grateful to have many parents and teachers helping us with the run club and without them we could not be so successful.

Each run club day we have the children participate in different running activities, some days we focus on longer distance running (appropriate per age group) and other we do shorter distance/speed work - we rotate the kids to 3 different stations each day. One other focus is a special “sport” of the day such as soccer, football agility drills, basketball drills, obstacle course and more.

Our Kindergarteners have their own run club day this Spring. We want to focus on our youngest run club group by giving them a Wednesday only run club day. Let us know how it goes!
